Over the years, many skin cancer cases have been diagnosed, the most important contributor UV Rays. There are 2 types of UV Rays : UVA and UVB. It was known that only UVB was dangerous until a recent study exposed that that UVA rays could also be harmful. Hence, we know that sunscreen could help us mitigate these skin issues of sunburn and skin cancer. Hence, choosing the right sunscreen with the right SPF number is very crucial.
Sunscreen is key, but effective coverage requires more effort than just slopping some lotion on when you arrive at the beach. Follow these tips to keep your skin healthy and sunburn-free. First we countdown the Do’s followed by Don’ts for proper sun care :
- Apply sunscreen everyday, 365 days a year, even when you are indoors and have a holiday or don’t have to visit anyone during the day hours.
- Choose a sunscreen that is greater than SPF 30, but be careful not to be fooled by an extremely high SPF numbers, such as 50.
- Consumer Reports tested 34 sunscreens and found that one-third of them failed to meet their SPF and water-resistant claims…some were way-off, up to 70 percent wrong. Most of those failing products had an SPF of below 30. Then there were errors on the other side. Some SPF 50+ were tested as an SPF 37 while SPF 100 tested as an SPF 36.
- Towel-dry first so that you apply the sunscreen to dry skin. Even if you’re not in the water, make sure to re-apply sunscreen at least every two hours, but more frequently if you do get wet, which includes sweat.
- For maximum effectiveness, sunscreen needs to be fully absorbed into your skin. Apply it at least 15 to 30 minutes before heading outdoors.
- The sun will be direct on your face during 10 am to 3 pm hours. Make sure to avoid the harsh sun treatment during the hottest hours of the day
- Do visit a dermatologist if you notice a suspicious mole or lesion. Many people simply visit their primary care doctor for skin issues.
- Pick a sunscreen approved by the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) and/or the Skin Cancer Foundation.
- Do buy sunscreens with zinc oxide and that are rich in antioxidants.
- Make sure that you apply sunscreen not only on your facial skin, but also on other parts of the body such as ears, lips and other uncovered skin exposed to the sun.
- Don’t assume a water-resistant sunscreen will last longer. Even these formulas will wear off after 30 minutes or more spent in the water or after excessive sweating.
- You may feel like protective while being under an umbrella but sun rays also penetrate through umbrellas and other straw shades. Do you know water, sand, concrete and other sources of reflective surfaces bounce back the sun rays! Yes they are, so wear a layer of sunscreen even in the winter season to protect the skin from sun reflections that come through snow in the winter.
- Don’t panic with a skin burn, but also make sure not to avoid the signs of skin cancer. Don’t forego a professional medical evaluation.
- Wear sunscreen no matter what your age. Some people think that most of their sun exposure happens before they are 18, so once they hit adulthood they don’t need sunscreen. However, that couldn’t be more false.
- Don’t forget to reapply sunscreen on a regular basis. Sunscreen isn’t made to last all day, especially if you’re swimming or sweating. Even the water-resistant stuff needs to be reapplied throughout the day.
- Don’t be afraid to ask questions. In order to understand the impact certain treatments may have on your health and in some cases, physical appearance.
